A National Bureau of Standards/NASA project directed by Johnson resulted in a lightweight breathing system including face mask, frame, harness and air bottle marketed by Scott Aviation. Aluminum composite material was used; frame and harness were easier to put on and take off. Today every major manufacturer of breathing apparatus incorporates NASA technology in some form, and inhalation injuries have been reduced.
